other things i have noticed.

1) guards with automatic weapons posted at toll booth (road into san cristobal from tuxtla)
2) grafitti such as "terrorismo = terrorismo del estado" and "vivan las resistancias del mundo" (that one spray painted over with a cross).

after the last update, i wandered around for many more hours. tried to find sna jolobil, a weaving cooperative, but couldn´t. men make the "shht, shhtt" sound to get your attention, but just ignoring them does the trick. walked around in the zocalo, totally crowded...many tourists, many people trying to sell things. from zapatista dolls to ropa americana. got lost (but was only a little ways from na bolom, i knew it) and gave up and took a taxi back. now i am just relaxing.

there are so many street dogs here. they are mostly all small. at first i thought one would bite me, but they seem harmless. i have been taking some pictures, but really just trying to see things for the first time without a camera glued to my face.

shht, shhtt

your description of corn being everywhere is reminding me of my trips to Mexico when I was a little kid. I can remember people were growing corn in spots between rocks that looked inaccesable on hillsides. also people holding iguanas by the tail for sale on the roadsides.

I've seen those Zapatista dolls before! I want one sooooo bad!

cant wait to see the pictures ]:)

I've heard about the Mexican street dogs. It might be different in Chiapas, but sadly, I hear it's common in Mexico for people to kick them for amusement.

i havent seen that happen, but i also wouldnt be surprised. mostly its just neglect, and im sure caused by poverty. i did see some of them chewing on some meaty bones, though.
